Late restart aids Leonard in Sooner Late Model victory at 81 Speedway

By Erick Chesterman (Park City, MO) -- Josh Leonard of out of Gibbon, NE won the Complete Well Service Sooner Late Model Series presented by Wichita Tire & Alignment portion of Saturday night’s show in their first of 3 visits to 81 Speedway during the 2021 race season. Along side the Sooner Late Model series, the HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars, Two M Motorsports & Machine Rookie Modifieds, and AutoTech Service Super Stocks were on hand for weekly racing series competition.

In the HeyGlassman.com Stock Car feature, Clint Smith wrestled the lead away from race long leader Beau Davis in the closing laps, laying claim to the first Stock Car checker flag of the season. Davis finished second, Joey Richmond third, AJ Finch finished fourth, and Austin Ramey completed the top 5. The three heat race wins went to Richmond, Smith, and Chris Holle.

The Two M Motorsports & Machine Rookie Modified main event proved to be a severe battle of attrition. Starting last on the grid, Wichita’s Ryan Quiring outlasted the field, then bested Zach Prather in a spirited 3 lap sprint to the checker flag to claim the win. Prather, Austin Krogmeier, Logan Johnson, and Doulphus Koeppen made up the top 5, while John Cohoon and Dakota Dale claimed heat race wins.

AutoTech Service Super Stock action saw James Weve turn a second-place performance one week ago into a dominating sweep on Saturday night. After winning the lone heat race earlier in the evening, Weve led from the drop of the green, never looking back while Super Stock ace David Blocher chased the No. 164 machine the entire way. Blocher settled for second, son Kyle Blocher was third, Rod Northcutt finished fourth, and Ron Creech completed the top 5.

Saturday April 17 will be a big night at 81 Speedway as the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars and the Midwest Wrap Co. IMCA Mod Lites kick off their respective seasons. Joining them the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series Alternative Pest Management Modifieds and Chunky Poodle B-Mods make their return to the 3/8-mile oval, along with the AutoTech Service Super Stocks, and Primal Beef Jerky Mini Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. Adult General Admission tickets are $12.00, Senior 65+ & Military $10.00, and kids 10 & Under are free.
