9/22/2020 – 81 Speedway – Park City, KS

Saturday the 19th was the final weekend of racing in the month of September at 81 Speedway, sounding the bell on just one more month to go during the 2020 season for the Park City, KS oval. Cars filled the pit area with 83 competitors making the call for racing action across 4 divisions on the night.
One Championship hunt was settled on the night, as Mike McIlvain’s model of consistency during the 2020 season proved to be just enough to hold off David Blocher for the title. Coming into the night Blocher tackled an uphill climb, trailing the 54 of McIlvain by a slim margin. Doing everything right, Blocher claimed the nights feature win in dominating fashion. When the final points were tallied, machinal woes and miscues throughout the season proved too much to overcome for the 24B. McIlvain had to battle his share of issues throughout the night, sustaining damage during an in-race accident, but soldiered on finishing 4th to lay claim to the 2020 AutoTech Service Center Street Stock Championship.
Mini Stock A-feature actions saw Wichita’s Kore Bice claim his 4th win of the year. Inheriting the lead after a spin by Colten Kelley, Bice never looked back driving to the checkers with Haley Cash, Dale Shockey, Jayce Reimer, and Aaron Esparza in tow. The nights lone heat race win went to the 111 of Nick Quiring.
For the third time on the year Jason Denny shook of the bad luck bug that has plagued him off and on throughout the 2020 season, claiming the win in Chunky Poodle Rookie Modified action. A solid drive from 7th to 2nd in heat race 1 put Denny inside the top six redraw for the nights A-feature starting spots. Receiving the number one starting spot, Denny took full advantage leading all 15 laps in route to the win. Curtis Barnes backed up his impressive first ever start at 81, finishing in the runner up spot for the second straight week. Last week’s feature winner Brett Davis finished 3rd, mid-season mini stock graduate Slade Mohr was 4th, and Rustin Wilson rounded out the top 5. Jim Roney went last to first in B-feature competition, while Dalton Murphy, Brett Davis, Dillon Moler, and Barnes claimed heat race wins.
A stout 30 car field signed in for Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified action, a mixture of USMTS road warriors, Midwest regional stars, and local track juggernauts all making the call. Flyin Ryan McAninch brought the 24 car A-feature field to the green and led the opening two laps, but it was fourth starting Tyler Davis on the early move, claiming the top spot at the exit of turn 4 to complete lap number 3. The only caution of the race came at the completion of that lap when Richard Wilson’s 2w stalled along the outside of the turns 3 & 4 fence.
When the race went back to green, Davis pulled away to a fifteen-car length advantage while 6th starting Brendon Gemmill engaged in a heated battle for the 3rd spot with McAninch. Settling that argument at the end of lap six, Gemmill went to work setting his sight squarely on the back of the Hughes racing chassis #65. With seven laps to go things started to heat up, as Davis’ lead was trimmed to a car length and a half. Gemmill tried multiple lines around the 81 Speedway oval on the next two circuits, attempting passes for the lead before the pair got into traffic. With five to go, traffic would play a factor over the last quarter of the race’s 20 lap distance.
The two leaders lined up nose to tail to drive around the first pair of lap cars to complete lap 16. With four to go, Davis used Ricky Bonham’s #34 machine as a pick, driving under the Hutchinson, KS driver at the entry of turn three, Gemmill getting trapped behind Bonham off turn four. With a slight bit of breathing room Davis attacked the middle portion of the speedway in turns one and two, while Gemmill switched to the top. Down the back-chute Davis’ lead swelled to five car lengths, and desperation began to set in for Gemmill. Running a razor thin cushion and still trying to work around the 34 machine, Gemmill caught a handful of 81 Speedway’s concrete barrier in turn three and four with two laps to go. Over the race’s final two laps Davis pulled away to claim his first victory on the year, Gemmill held on to second, and McAninch finished third.
Claremore, Oklahoma’s “Big Daddy” Joe Duvall visited the 81 Speedway for the first during weekly racing competition finishing fourth, and tenth starting Kenny Sweet completed the top 5. The night’s hard charger award went to Kendall Kemp. Mount Hope’s Tad Davis won the B-Feature. Heat race wins went to Brian Franz, Lewis Jackson, Kyler Kemp, and Tyler Davis.
81 Speedway takes a week off on September 26. Racing action returns Saturday, October 3rd with a special edition $1000 to win “All Modified Shootout” with a $500 bonus eligible to any non USRA driver should they win the event.
